Wedding scrapbook, 1890.

Scrapbook relating to the wedding of Helena Forsyth Ellis and John Stuart Elliott, held in New York City on September 4, 1890. The scrapbook contains a copy of the wedding announcement, newspaper notices about the wedding, a few calling cards, and telegrams and letters of congratulations. Mr. Elliott had unexpectedly received an offer of a job in Jamaica, so he and Miss Ellis very quickly arranged for their marriage to take place in New York, where he was living. The wedding was small, with only a few friends and relatives able to attend. Miss Mary Gaff was bridesmaid, and Frank Roosevelt, the organ builder from New York, was best man. The newspaper announcements describe the bride's dress and jewelry, as well as that of several guests. The groom's mother wrote a letter begging her son not to go to Jamaica, and she also wrote a cordial note to the bride, not only expressing her delight in having Helena in the family, but also begging her to talk John out of going to Jamaica, "the hot bed of yellow fever and death."
